Frequently Asked Questions
Installation & Fitting FAQs
Can other people still use the stairs normally?
Modern stairlifts have a slim line design with seats, arm and foot rests that can be folded up when not in use. This leaves plenty of room for other stair users to walk up and down the stairs. Most stairlift models take up about 300mm (12 inches) in depth when the seat and footrest is up.

How long does it take to install a straight stairlift?
To ensure that your stairlift is fitted to the highest of standards, we allow around 4 hours from arrival to completion.
How long does it take to install a curved stairlift?
It usually takes about 6 hours to fit a stairlift to a curved staircase. Due to the nature of bespoke curved stairlifts, our installation team will be able to provide more specific time estimates after your initial survey. It would be fair to say that a curved stairlift is not expected to take more than one full day to install.
Do you need to remove the carpet on the stairs?
When installing your stairlift, there is no need to remove your carpet. The rail for the stairlift fits over the top of your carpet.
Will my extra handrail need to be removed?
The answer to this is fully subject to your individual survey. In many cases, the handrail is removed before the stairlift is fitted – as it will no longer be required – and will free up additional space on the stairs. However, where at all possible, we will always ensure there is a handrail provision in place.
Does the stairlift require any special wiring?
In most instances, we simply plug your stairlift into an available socket. Should any additional wiring or sockets be required, we have an electrical contractor that can assist with the installation.
What if I have narrow stairs?
Depending on the width or your stairs, we are well placed to be able to help. We stock a wide range of stairlift models to suit most staircase requirements. As part of our free no obligation survey, our stairlift surveyor will recommend the most suitable stairlift for your individual needs.
Do we need to have a power supply or is it run off a battery?
Our stairlifts are battery powered, but we will require an outlet- either at the top or bottom of the stairs – to keep it charged. As previously mentioned, stairlifts can be plugged into a standard 240v socket.
Can I choose what colour my stairlift is?
Depending on the stairlift that you chose, many of them do come with a choice of seat fabrics and colours. In some cases, we may even be able to provide a coloured stairlift rail to suit your home. Your stairlift surveyor will be able to advise you accordingly, during your initial survey.
Can anyone install a stairlift?
No. Stairlifts must be installed according to strict British Safety Standards. You can be rest assured, our engineers will install your stairlift to these exacting requirements.
Are there any weight restrictions on the stairlifts?
This depends on the model, but most stairlifts have a weight limit of between 18 and 21 stone. However, we can provide stairlifts that have a weight limit of up to 25 stone. Our specialist team will be able to advise you accordingly.
Stairlift Usage FAQs
Do stairlifts use lots of electricity?
Stairlifts are not expensive to run, in fact – on average – a stairlift is less expensive to run than a single low-energy light bulb. This equates to less than £5 per month!
What happens if my partner has used the lift to go upstairs and I’m stuck downstairs?
All stairlifts come with remote controls that can be mounted at the top and bottom of the stairs. These can be very useful if more than one person in the house uses the stairlift and are extremely easy to use.
How noisy are they?
Our latest Handicare and Otolift products are among the quietest stairlifts available and won’t cause your household or neighbours any noise disturbance.
What happens if something is left on the stairs and gets in the way of the stairlift?
Stairlifts are extremely sensitive to foreign objects or obstructions left on the stairs. They are fitted with multiple sensors that will automatically stop the stairlift if an object is detected as in the way, as a safety matter. Once the object or obstruction has been removed, the stairlift can be operated as normal. As part of our survey, guidance will be given to ensure fabric items, such as curtains, are kept at a safe distance from the stairlift.
How easy is it to get on and off?
Stairlifts are fitted with either manual or powered swivel seats and heavy duty arm rests, to assist you as you get on and off the stairlift. In some cases, a grab rail located on a wall or newel post can be fitted to provide further assistance or support.
How is a stairlift operated?
Stairlifts are operated by a simple, large, up and down joystick located on the arm, which is designed to work with minimal pressure. Gently press the stick in the direction of travel to start the stairlift. If you remove your hand from the joystick at any point, the stairlift will stop, as a built-in safety measure.
How fast will it go? I’m worried I’ll be frightened to use it.
Stairlifts are designed to be slow, smooth, safe and easy to use. Norfolk Stairlifts has the largest display of working stairlifts in Norfolk, so if you – or a family member – is at all worried, please make an appointment to visit our showroom and try some stairlifts for yourself. For an average straight staircase, a stairlift will take approximately 40 seconds to ascend.
