Norfolk Stairlifts have recently installed a Platinum Curve Stairlift in Elmswell near Bury St Edmunds for a gentleman who needs to get from his wheelchair on and off a stairlift on his own.
Transfer heights and space to manoeuvre were obviously very important here. Wheelchair heights were measured and transfer heights both top and bottom of the stairs were discussed in detail (it had to work!).
The Platinum Curve Stairlift supplied by Norfolk Stairlifts is used regularly to tackle this type of transfer as it is adjustable in most areas. The seat height however is preset at a suitable height for transfer from most wheel chairs. The arms can be adjusted so that when they are folded up they will impact very little on a user sliding on or off the seat. The seat back can also be adjusted for depth so that this gentleman at 6 foot tall will feel like he is sitting properly in the stairlift as well as giving more transfer space.
The gentleman has a standard wheelchair downstairs and a wheeled commode upstairs. The Platinum Curve allowed for similar height transfers. These pictures show the situation upstairs.

The place-name Elmswella is formed by the conjunction of elm + wella, where wella is Old English for stream.
A huge village green – Butten Haugh Green – once formed the centre of Elmswell. However, the arrival of the railway in 1846 and the bacon factory in 1911, meant the green now has houses built on it.
