This lovely period cottage in Mundford was undergoing refurbishment for the new owner. A stairlift was required and Norfolk Stairlifts were invited to survey the staircase.
The owner wanted a stairlift fitted before she moved in. Our surveyor carried out a full survey whilst working alongside decorators and carpenters.
The Otolift Air was chosen mainly for its low impact on the property. The rail of the Otolift Air is currently the narrowest available at only 6cm across.
The airy landing area had a length of wall continuing from the top step. This over run allows the stairlift to park onto the landing to allow for safe seating and standing. To ensure this is safe we need to make sure the stairlift finishes as far onto the landing as possible without becoming a hazard for anyone walking here. The minimum we would recommend would be 60cm (2 feet). This is far enough away from the stairtop to avoid an accident. However, if walking frames are used or a transfer to a wheelchair or similar is required then this would be insufficient. Our surveyor would make this judgment in discussion with the user and any health professionals involved. In this instance there is 90cm (3 feet) and no walking aids being used. The pictures below show this.
Consideration is always given as to the best method of seating and standing from the stairlift. The Otolift air from Norfolk Stairlifts comes as standard with a powered footrest. This is operated by a control on the stairlift arm. This allows the footrest to remain folded up and out of the way when the user sits or stands. The footrest is lowered once the user is seated.
When the Norfolk Stairlift engineers arrived to fit the stairlift the property had been finished inside to a very high standard. In situations like this the engineers will do their best to leave the staircase in the same condition they found it. A self adhesive carpet protector was the first thing that was fitted! This ensures that the multiple trips up and down the stairs by the engineers during installation will not harm the carpet.
Power had been more than adequately provided with mains sockets at both the top and the bottom of the stairs. The upstairs power point was used. You can see the power supply neatly fitted here along with the remote control for the stairlift.
This installation was carried out by Norfolk Stairlifts on time and the user was very pleased. The rail fits unobtrusively and the seat looks smart and can be parked at the top or the bottom of the stairs as required.
